Gunmen have killed Celestine Onwumere, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who attacked the Orie Mbieri division in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State two months to his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force because the officer was due for retirement in December 2016.

The gunmen jumped inside the police premises through fence on Friday and opened fire on the policemen on duty and took to their heels.

They shot Onwumere as he was reportedly relaxing in a police patrol vehicle on the premises when the assailants descended on him after he refused giving away his rifle.

A police source said:

“It was in the process of dragging his rifle with his killers that he was shot and he died on the spot. He was the Head of Patrol and Guard Unit of the state. He was the President-General of his community, Isuokporo in the Isu LGA, Imo State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the death of the ASP, killed by armed robbers.
