America does not See IPOB as a terrorist organization” – Spokesman for the American Embassy Russell Brooks

On 24 September, 2017 in Paris: (DGW) The United States Government says it does not see the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization.

This is in reaction to the judicial backing given the executive order of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday last week outlawing the group and its activities throughout Nigeria.

But responding to a mail sent by the Punch newspapers to the US Embassy in Nigeria, the US government spokesperson, Mr Russell said much as the United States believes in and committed to the unity of Nigeria and supports a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis, it does not see the separatist group as a terrorist group.

He said, “The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law.”

The US embassy, however, declined to comment on whether the Federal Government had asked it to treat IPOB as a terrorist organisation and to block money sent to IPOB from the US.

Brooks also did not state the US position on the agitation for a Biafran state.

The bottom line of the news is that, the United States has declared that it does not consider the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist organisation as claimed by Nigeria.
