FRANCISTOWN – A police officer based at Gerald Estate Police Station in Francistown has accidentally shot and killed an eight-year-old boy of Tati Siding.
Botswana Police Service Public Relations Officer Senior Superintendent Near Bagali confirmed the incident saying the police officer who was on duty had in possession a service pistol.
He explained that his duty on that particular fateful day required the police officer to carry a service pistol but “unintentionally discharged a fatal shooting.”
Senior Superintendent Bagali said the incident happened at around 10:30am when the police officer had visited a relative.
He said whilst at the relative’s place, a shot was discharged from the pistol and killed an eight-year-old boy who was certified dead on arrival at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.
The deceased’s body is still awaiting post-mortem.
Superintendent Bagali explained that the police officer was assisting the police with investigations to find out what could have happened.
“The police officer forms part of our investigations because he is the centre of investigation(s),” adding that investigations would determine who was wrong. BOPA
